Despite MG’s recent shift upmarket with the IM5 and IM6, the brand is staying true to its roots by delivering affordable, capable cars. The upcoming all-electric MG2 is set to be the next big hit, with an expected starting price of £20,000 (USD 25,500 / EUR 23,500 / MYR 121,000) when it launches in the UK, making it one of the most budget-friendly electric vehicles in its class.
Launch Timeline
The MG2 is scheduled for its global reveal in the second half of 2026, according to MG’s Head of Product and Planning, David Allison. The entry-level EV is expected to be available for the UK market in 2027, offering an attractive option for cost-conscious buyers.
Allison first hinted at the new EV in March 2024, revealing that it would serve as an all-electric sibling to the popular MG3. Measuring around 4 metres (13.12 feet) in length, the MG2 aims for the “magic 20,000-Euro price bracket (USD 21,800 / GBP 17,000 / MYR 95,000)”—a sweet spot in terms of size, range, and affordability.
Market Position and Rivals
The MG2 will sit just below the MG4 in MG’s lineup, targeting the B-segment hatchback market. By 2027, it will face stiff competition from upcoming models like the Renault Twingo, Volkswagen ID.1, and the Citroën e-C3 (2024 Car of the Year).

Design and Platform
The MG2 will share MG’s latest design language seen on the MGS5 EV and MG4. Inspired by the 4.1-metre (13.45 feet) MG3, it will blend stylish, compact dimensions with the practical traits of a pure-electric vehicle. Thanks to SAIC Motor’s Chinese manufacturing capabilities and economies of scale, MG can keep costs down without sacrificing quality.
The MG2 is expected to be built on the Modular Scalable Platform used by the MG4. While the larger 77 kWh battery may be too big for this compact model, smaller 51 kWh or 64 kWh packs are likely options. These would surpass the Citroën e-C3’s 44 kWh battery, which offers up to 198 miles (319 km) of range—meaning the MG2 could comfortably exceed 200 miles (322 km) on a single charge.
Technology and Features
The MG2’s interior tech is expected to mirror that of the MG3, featuring:
- 7-inch (17.78 cm) digital instrument cluster
- 10.25-inch (26.04 cm) infotainment display
- MG Pilot driver-assistance suite with adaptive cruise control, active emergency braking, and lane-change assist
With its combination of low cost, competitive range, and modern features, the MG2 is positioned to be one of the most appealing budget EVs in the market when it arrives.
